Pleural Effusions
The pleural space is surrounded by the visceral pleura of the lung and parietal pleura and contains 5 to 15 mL of friction-decreasing fluid at any given time. During a 24-hour period, up to 1 liter of fluid may pass through the space. Indicative of a disease process, a pleural effusion is an abnormal amount of fluid collected in the pleural space that occurs in conjunction with pulmonary diseases, such as pulmonary emboli and pneumonia, or systemic diseases, such as heart failure, malignant mesothelioma, and neoplastic disease.
